About Riverside, California
Riverside is a city in California’s Southern Division, located along the Santa Ana River. The city is situated on the Santa Ana River. It forms part of an eastern metropolitan area with San Bernardino and Ontario.
In 1870, the city was built in part on a portion of Rancho Jurupa, a Mexican land grant of 1838. Originally known as Jurupa, the town began as a silk-growing colony. Renamed Riverside, it evolved into an orchard center; the state’s first Washington navel-orange trees were produced therein.
Today, the Parent Navel Orange Tree and the California Citrus State Historic Park are two popular local destinations.
Manufacturing and distributive activities are part of Riverside’s economy. The University of California’s Riverside campus (1954) houses a citrus research station.
Riverside is the seat of several higher education institutions, including La Sierra University (1922; Seventh-day Adventist), California Baptist University (1950), and Inland Empire College of the Bible.

The main building of Sherman Indian High School (1901), one of the many boarding institutions established by the U.S. government to encourage American Indians to assimilate, contains a museum that keeps records from other facilities.
The city, which is surrounded by mountains and hills, was founded in 1912. From there it’s about a 30-minute drive south along State Route 74 to March Air Reserve Base (until 1996 March Air Force Base), with a field museum featuring historic aircraft on the premises. The Santa Ana River Regional Park lies to the north of the city.
The Lake Perris State Recreation Area (1,165 acres [5.84 km2]), Mockingbird Canyon, and Sycamore Canyon Park are all popular locations for slab rock climbing. Other recreational options in the area include Lake Perris State Recreation Area, Mockingbird Canyon, and Sycamore Canyon Park.
Riverside, California is the county seat and largest city in Riverside County, with over 336,000 people. The sweet and zesty navel orange was first grown here in the early 20th century, giving rise to an entire empire centered on this delicious fruit.
Riverside is home to a number of historic places that are nationally registered and more than 100 city landmarks dedicated to this city’s colorful past. The city of the arts and innovation is popular with tourists and locals, who visit art galleries, restaurants, and performing arts centers in the downtown area.
A local family opened the Glenwood Cottages guest house, which later evolved into the world-renowned Mission Inn Hotel and Spa, America’s largest Mission Revival–style building.
The inn’s list of guests has included Presidents Nixon and Reagan, film actors, and royalty. The historic Fox Performing Arts Center in downtown Riverside was built in 1929 as a Spanish Colonial Revival theater that hosted the nation’s first public screening of Gone with the Wind.
Riverside is also home to four colleges and universities: Riverside City College was the first institution; others include the University of California, Riverside; Cal Baptist University and La Sierra University.
