Rialto History
Rialto began as a town in 1911, although it has been inhabited since ancient times, when archaeologists believe the first Indian settlements were established.
The early years of the 20th century were a time when citrus groves and vineyards began to become established in the region. Later, in the late 1800s, families whose main activities were agriculture and ranching moved into the area, followed by others who farmed animal feed or grew potatoes.
Rialto’s success was fueled by the development of transportation technologies, which made it easier for merchants and consumers to reach each other. The population grew steadily throughout the 19th century until a massive increase occurred between 1950 and 1980, when it rose more than ten-fold. It is not known how Rialto acquired its name.
The name may have been derived from Italian words Rialto and Alta, according to one theory. Another account holds that the city was named after the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy (a famous landmark). The bridge has remained as a symbol of community pride known as the “Bridge of Progress” regardless of whether or not it was named
