Colton is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The Inland Empire is home to this midsized city. Working people from throughout Southern California flock to this family-friendly community on the “east side” of Los Angeles, which is only around 55 miles away and an hour’s drive on a good day on the 10 Freeway.
Orchards used to fill Colton with a delicious aroma of oranges and lemons, as do orchards in dry, sunny climes. The orchards have mostly been replaced by buildings and construction, but one of the landmarks from the past continues to exist and is visible in the city.
The Santa Ana River bisects Colton, and the Southern Pacific Railway tracks cross it on a massive concrete bridge that curves in a gentle S-shape. This bridge is one of the few remaining examples of a ” Camelback” design, which was once widely used for railroad bridges. The structure has been designated as a State Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is an engineering marvel and a beautiful sight, especially when illuminated at night.
Colton is bordered by several other cities in the Inland Empire. To the north is San Bernardino, to the east is Redlands, to the south is Grand Terrace, and to the west are Riverside and Loma Linda. The Santa Ana River also forms the western boundary of the city.
The climate in Colton is typical of Southern California, with warm winters and hot summers. July is the hottest month, with an average high temperature of 92 degrees Fahrenheit. January is the coldest month, with an average low temperature of 42 degrees Fahrenheit.
The economy of Colton is based on retail, transportation, warehousing, and manufacturing. The city is home to several large distribution centers and warehouses for companies such as UPS, Target, Mattel, and Coca-Cola. Manufacturing is also an important part of the local economy, with major employers including H.K. Porter Company, Colton Joint Unified School District, and the city of Colton itself.
The Colton community is served by four school districts: Colton Joint Unified School District, Redlands Unified School District, Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District, and Rialto Unified School District. There are also several private schools in the city.
Colton is a diverse city, with a population that is about evenly split between White, Hispanic, and African American residents. The median household income is $37,000, and about 19% of residents live below the poverty line.
